UNION OF JOURNALISTS FOR AFRICAN FREE PRESS( UJPLA) HAILS UN DECLARATION OF SLAVERY AS CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY
The Union of Journalists for African Free Press ( UJPLA) fully welcomes the vote by the UN General Assembly declaring the slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
We commend most highly Ghana’s President , John Dramani Mahama for his audacious move and tenacious leadership which culminated in the landmark vote.
UJPLA also salutes the African Union for its overwhelming solidarity in securing the historic victory.
We are optimistic that the UN declaration signals a pathway to restorative justice which must be pursued by the global community in particular , and progressive forces in particular, with all consuming seriousness .
To this end, UJPLA urges journalists unions and their members across Africa to deploy the power they wield and the influence they peddle to help accomplish the twin goals of reparative justice and African renaissance.
